SAT Math - Polynomial Operations

More complex polynomial multiplication involve multiplying a two term polynomial with another two term polynomial. You need to use the FOIL principle to process the multiplication. If you don't know what FOIL means, its just a mnemonic for you to remember the multiplication involving two polynomials involving two terms.

 

  • F: Multiply first terms
  • O: Next multiply outer terms
  • I: Next Multiply inner terms
  • L: Finally multiply last terms

The following example shows FOIL concept in action. Obviously FOIL is not the only way to achieve the same results. However its a good way to remember that you need to multiply each and every term of the first polynomial with every term of the second polynomial.
